Two men have now paid the price for their impulsive actions after fabricating and spreading the rumor of "multiple people from a tech company being taken away" to gain online traffic. On the evening of October 12, Beijing police announced the handling of several cases of online rumors. Among them, Guo and Chang fabricated the claim of "multiple people from a certain tech company being taken away" out of thin air and publicly released it. The information was widely spread, disrupting social order, and the two have now been placed under criminal compulsory measures by law.
This case refers to the previous rumor campaign that Moonlight Face experienced. Earlier on September 12, Moonlight Face had publicly denied the rumors, clearly stating that the information about its founder and employees circulating online was entirely fictional and maliciously fabricated, and had reported it to the public security authorities. Now, with the police taking action, the account holders who gained traffic by making up stories have been brought before the law. When a rumor with no source can quickly stir up the entire network, the company named in the rumor often finds it much more difficult to prove its innocence and calm the public opinion than the person who typed those few lines.
