The capital and hardware frenzy in artificial intelligence has once again delivered a major development. Recently, chip giant Broadcom and AI startup Anthropic finalized a debt financing deal worth as much as $63 billion, intended to provide ample funding for a massive AI infrastructure buildout.
To help bring about this unprecedented AI debt deal, Broadcom's CEO personally stepped in urgently and spent nearly two months traveling around, working to persuade major banks to commit funding for more than $40 billion in loans. Under the plan, this huge sum will mainly support Anthropic in leasing custom AI chips jointly developed by Broadcom and Google.
Although Anthropic is the direct beneficiary and central player, the size and credit limitations of a startup mean it still cannot raise such enormous funds without the support of a strong commercial partner. Currently, Anthropic is drawing much attention as it races toward an IPO filing, and the two sides have also been trying to finalize this key partnership before the formal filing. In this deal, known as "Project North Star," Broadcom, at the heart of the action, agreed to provide partial financial guarantees to banks by leveraging its excellent credit rating, greatly easing financial institutions' anxiety about the risk of more than $40 billion in loans. Earlier, people familiar with the matter said that because of the deal's unprecedented scale, some banks had shown some concern in recent weeks about participating in the project, and the personal involvement and key guarantees of Broadcom's CEO ultimately helped the deal close smoothly.
