Large AI models have already demonstrated astonishing capabilities in static tasks such as text creation, code writing, and image generation. But how do they actually perform in fast-changing real-time interactive scenarios? Recently, NVIDIA, together with top institutions such as the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), officially released a new real-time interaction benchmark: Realtime-Bench. The benchmark was created to provide a precise yardstick for evaluating AI's overall performance in dynamic environments.

Core Testing Mechanism: A Comprehensive Look at Three Dynamic Capabilities and Clock Protocols

To comprehensively assess how large models handle real-world real-time scenarios, Realtime-Bench carefully designed 50 rich tasks covering eight categories of scenarios. During testing, the benchmark focuses on three key capabilities: real-time perception, time-adaptive reasoning, and timing of actions.

At the same time, to scientifically distinguish the specific effects of different factors on model performance, researchers set up three different environment-advancement clock protocols in the tests. This rigorous testing architecture can effectively strip away external interference and directly reveal the performance foundation of large models in dynamic processing.

Evaluation Results Are In: Most Models Are Caught in the Dual Dilemma of Low Latency and Reasoning Ability

Researchers used the benchmark to conduct in-depth tests on 12 cutting-edge large models worldwide. The results exposed clear weaknesses in current mainstream AI when handling real-time tasks.

Data shows that under the stringent scenario where the environment advances according to actual reasoning time, the best-performing model, GPT-6-Astra, achieved only a 44% task success rate. Under high reasoning effort, the probability of a model achieving full success three times was only 36%. This indicates that most cutting-edge large models still struggle to strike a perfect balance between extremely low latency and deep reasoning ability when facing complex real-time interactions.

In-Depth Experimental Insights: Blindly Increasing Reasoning Effort Cannot Solve the Root Problem

In addition to the overall low success rate, the study revealed several key industry insights through further experiments:

Reasoning effort and success rate are not linearly positively correlated: In real-time tasks, blindly increasing a model's reasoning effort does not necessarily improve task success rate effectively.

The trade-off between depth of thought and timing of action: In actual operation, models must precisely balance deep, deliberate thought against fleeting windows for action.

The limitations of simply reducing latency: Experimental results clearly show that relying solely on shortening inference latency cannot fully solve all real-time interaction challenges faced in the real world.

The launch of Realtime-Bench not only provides the industry with a benchmark tool for evaluating the dynamic interaction level of large models, but also sounds an alarm for AI researchers worldwide: how to break through the bottleneck of real-time perception will become a key breakthrough direction for next-generation large models on the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI).
