Recently, Jerry Tworek, the Vice President of Research at OpenAI, participated in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, where he shared the latest updates on the next-generation foundational model, GPT-5. The new model aims to integrate multiple products into a unified system, reducing user frustration associated with switching between different models. Specifically, GPT-5 will consolidate tools like Codex, Operator, Deep Research, and Memory into a single framework.

In the Q&A session, Tworek also discussed the origins of Codex. Codex initially started as a side project, but the development team realized they were not fully leveraging its potential during their daily work. Through efforts, they managed to triple Codex's programming efficiency, highlighting its immense value in the software development process.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is considering flexible pricing options, including pay-as-you-go plans, to cater to diverse user needs. Team members actively shared details and future plans for Codex, aiming to help developers better utilize these tools.
Regarding GPT-5, Tworek stated that its primary goal is to enhance the capabilities of existing models while reducing the need for users to switch between different tools. Although Operator is currently in research preview, it will continue to be improved and become more practical in the future.
Additionally, whether Codex is suitable for all developers became a hot topic. Tworek pointed out that Codex may be more beneficial for developers looking to solve mundane problems rather than just targeting senior engineers. Currently, Codex primarily relies on container runtime information without direct access to the latest library documentation. In the future, OpenAI plans to combine retrieval-augmented generation techniques to improve the model's ability to access up-to-date knowledge.
When asked how Codex can assist beginner developers, Tworek mentioned that by providing excellent learning support, Codex can effectively reduce the entry barrier for newcomers, enabling them to quickly master programming skills. He emphasized that current models cannot replace humans with longer memories and broader background knowledge. Instead, Codex’s goal is to enhance human developers' capabilities, helping them achieve better results in software development.
Key points:
💡 GPT-5 will integrate Codex, Operator, Deep Research, and Memory, reducing tool-switching frustrations.
🚀 Codex's development efficiency has tripled, mainly benefiting developers solving routine problems.
📚 OpenAI plans to use Codex to help beginner developers learn faster and empower human developers.
