A leading AI video technology company, Runway, held its annual AI Film Festival in New York. This event drew global attention as creators from all over the world submitted around 6,000 short films, with ten outstanding works selected for screening. Runway CEO Cristobal Barrenechea remarked during the event that the vision from three years ago has now become a reality, with millions of people worldwide using their tools to create billions of videos.

Building on the first AI Film Festival's 300 submissions, this year’s event significantly expanded in scale, showcasing a runtime of 90 minutes and featuring diverse and boldly conceptual short films. The Best Film award went to Jacob Adler's "Total Pixel Space," which, in 9 minutes and 28 seconds, explored the potential number of images within a digital space and estimated them mathematically, delivering an awe-inspiring visual experience.

The runner-up was Andrew Salt's "Jailbird," which narrates a chicken's experiences in a UK prison and its involvement in a human-animal rehabilitation program from the chicken's perspective. Third place went to Ricardo Viasaventuriano and Edward Satch’s "One," set in the future, telling the story of an interstellar journey. These ten short films stood out from thousands of submissions and will continue to screen in Los Angeles and Paris.

Judges focused heavily on the effectiveness and innovativeness of AI technology usage when scoring. It is worth noting that while all entries were required to use AI video technology, not all were entirely AI-generated. There were no specific requirements regarding the proportion of AI content, so many works blended live-action footage with AI elements. Barrenechea stated that their goal is to encourage creators to explore and experiment with the possibilities of various AI tools.

Creating a logically coherent film is no easy feat. Even for just a few seconds of footage, creators need to undergo multiple adjustments and carefully set instructions to ensure continuity in visuals. Despite some limitations, AI video performance and realism are rapidly improving compared to the first AI Film Festival in 2023.

Runway encourages participants to use their own tools to create films but also allows the use of tools from other platforms. With the continuous development of AI video technology within the industry, a variety of tools such as text, image, and audio generators have emerged, providing creators with broader creative spaces.
