A major transformation is underway in Japan's display industry. Sharp Corporation, once a giant in large LCD panel production for televisions, completely ceased production at its Sakai Display Products Corporation (SDP) in 2024, marking the end of an era for large-size LCD panel manufacturing in Japan. However, the once-dormant factory is poised for a new life. According to the Nikkei Shimbun, SoftBank Group officially signed an agreement this Friday to invest approximately 100 billion yen (approximately 4.877 billion yuan) to acquire this Sharp facility in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.

Recently, AMD announced in its Q4 2024 earnings call that it plans to accelerate the launch of its next-generation data center GPU series - AMD Instinct MI350. AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that the MI350 will undergo sample testing with 'key customers' this quarter and will ramp up production and shipping by mid-year. Su noted that AMD initially planned to launch the MI350 in the second half of 2025, but the product’s progress has exceeded expectations, coupled with strong customer demand.

The construction of data centers in the UK is undergoing a significant transformation. A recent survey of 3,000 executives in the data center industry shows that they generally believe the current planning approval process is overly complicated, severely limiting the development of data centers. The consulting firm Business Critical Solutions (BCS) in its report 'Powering the Future' mentioned that the UK government plans to categorize the development of large data centers as 'National Significant Infrastructure Projects' (NSIPs), meaning it will be handled by the central government.

Dell has recently initiated its second round of major layoffs, marking the second time in 15 months that the company has taken such action. The layoffs primarily focus on restructuring the sales team to enhance the sales of AI products and optimize data center sales strategies. It is reported that approximately 12,500 employees, mainly from the sales and marketing teams, are affected this week. Over the past 15 months, Dell has laid off more than 20,000 employees, including 13,000 in the last fiscal year, nearly half of which occurred in February of last year. The layoffs aim to streamline management and reallocate investment priorities.
