One of the largest publishing companies in the United States, Dotdash Meredith, recently announced that it will lay off approximately 143 employees, accounting for about 4% of its total workforce. This news comes from a leaked internal memo. Dotdash Meredith owns several well-known media brands, including People, Food & Wine, Better Homes & Gardens, and Investopedia.

Layoffs

This layoff is not coincidental; it follows a strategic partnership agreement between Dotdash and OpenAI. This agreement is expected to generate at least $16 million in annual revenue for Dotdash, which will help the company maintain a competitive edge in the AI technology space. Under this agreement, OpenAI will prioritize displaying Dotdash's "trusted content" in its models, meaning users will more easily see articles and related links published by Dotdash when using ChatGPT.

According to Dotdash's announcement, OpenAI will collaborate with the company to develop new AI products and features to enhance the reader experience. Additionally, Dotdash will receive a "technology investment" to improve its advertising platform D/Cipher, which is expected to help the AI platform expand to approximately 30 million websites.

Despite the significant revenue this partnership brings, it has raised concerns about the future of its employees. Previously, in November 2024, Dotdash had already laid off 53 media workers, and this large-scale layoff has led to questions about the company's strategic direction. In the collaboration with OpenAI, Dotdash's executives stated that while there has been financial growth, it is difficult to ignore the wave of unemployment caused by technological transformation.

In the past three financial quarters, IAC (Dotdash's parent company) has gained substantial licensing revenue due to its collaboration with OpenAI, indicating the initial success of this strategic partnership.
