According to reports, Apple plans to open its AI models on devices to third-party developers at the global developer conference (WWDC) in 2025. The aim is to promote the creation of applications and expand Apple's intelligent features. Apple is developing a software development kit (SDK) that will allow developers to use its small, device-based AI models instead of more advanced cloud-based models. This approach is similar to Google's launch of Gemini Nano AI on the Android system.

By opening up its AI technology - Apple Intelligence - Apple hopes to inspire a wave of new intelligent applications, enabling developers to fully utilize its system. Currently, developers can only integrate limited Apple Intelligent functions, including AI writing tools and image generators, but they have not been able to use Apple’s core AI models (Apple Foundation Models) to build their own AI-driven features.

Apple appears to be somewhat behind other companies in the AI field, such as Samsung and Google, which have already equipped their devices with advanced AI functions. Earlier this year, Apple suspended its AI news summary feature due to some errors causing dissatisfaction among media outlets. Additionally, Apple's Genmoji tool performed poorly in generating custom emojis, often producing undesirable results. Furthermore, updates to Siri experienced some delays.

By opening up its models, Apple can encourage developers to create distinctive applications, thereby enhancing the appeal of iPhones and Macs. It is expected that the opening of AI models will be one of the major announcements at WWDC next month. In addition, Apple plans to significantly redesign the software for iPhones, iPads, and Macs, with the project codenamed "Solarium," aiming to make these systems more unified and closer in appearance to visionOS on its Vision Pro head-mounted device.

Developers may also receive new tools to build voice-driven features through Siri, although this might not happen until the release of iOS19. There are also hints about other AI projects, including an energy-efficient AI mode and an AI health application for a virtual health coach, though the latter is expected to be released in 2026.
