Google has recently announced that its AI note-taking application, NotebookLM, is now open to a younger user base. Previously, the tool was limited to users aged 18 and above, but it is now available to all Google Workspace for Education users of any age, as well as general consumers aged 13 and older.

This move aims to allow students in lower and middle grades to use this AI research tool to better understand and master classroom knowledge. NotebookLM is no longer just a note-taking tool; it offers a series of powerful new features to assist with learning. Students can now convert study materials and notes into audio summaries similar to podcasts, making it easy to listen at any time; they can also use interactive mind maps to visually organize complex concepts and ideas. Additionally, the recently introduced video overviews feature can combine notes, PDFs, and images into dynamic video presentations.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly used in education, concerns about student data privacy and technology misuse have also arisen. In response, Google emphasized that it has implemented stricter content safety policies for users under 18 to filter inappropriate AI responses. At the same time, Google has committed not to use users' uploaded content or chat records for training AI models, nor will it conduct manual reviews, to ensure the privacy and safety of young users.

The expansion of NotebookLM into the youth market follows OpenAI's launch of the ChatGPT educational mode, clearly indicating that competition among tech giants in the field of AI education is intensifying. All parties are actively positioning themselves, striving to deeply integrate AI into the next generation's learning and research processes.
