According to the latest analysis from app intelligence provider Appfigures, since its launch in May 2023, the ChatGPT mobile app from OpenAI (available on iOS and Android) has accumulated a total of $2 billion in user spending worldwide. This astonishing figure is approximately 30 times the combined revenue of its main competitors Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
Data shows that so far this year, the ChatGPT mobile app has generated $1.35 billion in revenue, representing a 673% explosive growth compared to $174 million during the same period in 2024 (January to July). The app's average monthly revenue is nearly $193 million, up from $25 million in the same period last year. This figure is about 53 times higher than that of its closest competitor Grok, which has generated approximately $25.6 million in revenue so far this year.
Although these figures do not fully reflect the overall revenue of each artificial intelligence company (as users can also subscribe via the web or through APIs), they clearly show consumer preferences and willingness to pay for these AI assistants in mobile app stores.
Notably, ChatGPT's leading position is not only reflected in revenue but also in download numbers. Its global total installations are estimated to have reached 690 million, while Grok has only 39.5 million installations. So far this year, ChatGPT has been downloaded 318 million times, which is 2.8 times more than the same period last year.
