OpenAI's ChatGPT mobile app is creating an astonishing revenue miracle in the mobile market. According to the latest analysis by app intelligence provider Appfigures, since its launch in May 2023, the iOS and Android apps of ChatGPT have generated $2 billion in global consumer spending, which is about 30 times the total lifetime consumer spending of competitors such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok.

Since 2025, the ChatGPT mobile app has generated $1.35 billion in revenue, a staggering 673% increase compared to $174 million during the same period in 2024 (January-July). The app currently generates nearly $193 million in revenue per month on average, far exceeding the $25 million from the same period last year.

This performance significantly surpasses the closest competitor. The second-ranked Grok has generated approximately $25.6 million in revenue so far this year, which is just 1/53rd of ChatGPT's. Grok's average monthly consumer spending is about $3.6 million, accounting for only 1.9% of ChatGPT's.

These figures indicate that other consumer-level chatbots still have a long way to go to catch up with ChatGPT's dominant position on mobile devices. It should be noted that these numbers do not provide a complete picture of the overall income of AI companies, because consumers, teams, and enterprises can also subscribe to AI services via web, and these companies also generate income through other means such as APIs.

However, these new data offer an important window into the popularity of the app among consumers, reflecting how users discover and pay for these AI assistants through mobile app stores.

Notably, when xAI's Grok was launched in November 2023 (later than ChatGPT), it initially did not have a standalone iOS or Android app. Users could only interact with this AI chatbot through the X platform. Grok was finally available on mobile devices through its own iOS app in early January 2025 and was launched on Google Play on March 4th.

Looking at one-time download spending, the lifetime global one-time download spending for ChatGPT is $2.91, while for Claude it is $2.55, for Grok it is $0.75, and for Copilot it is just $0.28.

In the US market, the one-time download spending for ChatGPT is higher, reaching $10, and the US market accounts for 38% of the app's total revenue so far. Germany is the second-largest market, accounting for 5.3% of ChatGPT's lifetime total spending.

From the perspective of downloads, ChatGPT's leading advantage is also obvious. The app has been installed globally around 690 million times, while Grok has only 39.5 million installations. This also provides a better context for Elon Musk's recent complaints about App Store favoring ChatGPT's position on rankings.

ChatGPT currently has an average monthly global download count of about 45 million, a 180% increase from about 16 million downloads during January-July 2024.
