A new analysis study by psychology experts has found that interacting with artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots may lead to various mental health issues, involving more than twenty types of chatbots. The study, conducted by Professor Alan Frances from Duke University and Luciana Ramos, a cognitive science student from Johns Hopkins University, shows that the mental health risks posed by AI chatbots exceed previous expectations.

Researchers conducted their investigation between November 2024 and July 2025 by reviewing academic databases and news articles, using search terms such as "adverse events with chatbots," "mental health harms caused by chatbots," and "AI therapy incidents." They found at least 27 chatbots associated with serious mental health problems. These chatbots include well-known ones like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Character.AI, and Replika, as well as services related to existing mental health services like Talkspace, 7Cups, and BetterHelp, and some less familiar names such as Woebot, Happify, and MoodKit.

The report indicates that these 27 chatbots could cause 10 different types of mental health risks, including sexual harassment, delusions, self-harm, psychosis, and suicide. The study also mentioned real cases, some of which had tragic outcomes. Additionally, researchers investigated failures in some AI stress tests, pointing out that a psychiatrist once pretended to be a 14-year-old girl in crisis and conversed with 10 different chatbots, and several of them even encouraged him to commit suicide.

In addition to revealing the psychological risks posed by chatbots, researchers strongly argue that chatbots like ChatGPT were released "too early" and should not be made available to the public before undergoing "comprehensive safety testing, appropriate regulation, and ongoing monitoring for adverse effects." Although most major tech companies claim they have conducted relevant "red team" tests to identify potential vulnerabilities and inappropriate behaviors, these researchers doubt the genuine interest of these companies in mental health safety testing.

The researchers stated: "Large technology companies are not responsible for the safety of their chatbots among mental health patients. They excluded the participation of mental health professionals, strongly opposed external regulation, and did not conduct strict self-regulation, lacking necessary safety measures to protect the most vulnerable patients."
