According to a recent joint survey by Reuters and Ipsos, more than 70% of American adults are concerned that artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to job losses. The survey, which interviewed 4,446 American adults, found that 71% of respondents said they are worried that AI will "permanently" replace the jobs of many American workers. At the same time, a Microsoft research report also identified the jobs most likely to be automated by AI, including roles related to information processing and communication, such as translators and customer service representatives.

In the technology field, many well-known figures have also predicted that AI tools currently being developed may lead to a large number of human job losses. Including the CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, and the CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy, have all expressed concerns. However, so far, the impact of AI on the job market has been limited, with one exception being that recent computer science graduates are facing increased difficulty in finding jobs in the tech industry.
Additionally, the survey found that many Americans have other concerns about the rise of AI. Over three-quarters of respondents (77%) said they were worried about "political chaos caused by American competitors using AI tools." These concerns are not unfounded, as the Internet is already flooded with deepfake images and videos showing famous people doing things they never actually did. And increasingly sophisticated text-to-speech models make it easier to impersonate real people's voices, a capability that has been exploited by some criminals and scammers.
In June, OpenAI released its latest annual report, detailing how global criminals are using its technology for malicious activities. One case mentioned in the report involved an operation possibly from China that used ChatGPT to generate fake social media posts and comments to support human users' positions on politically controversial issues, such as dissolving the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
At the same time, most of the survey respondents also expressed concerns about the erosion of interpersonal relationships due to the rise of AI partners (66%), as well as concerns about the energy consumption of the technology (61%).
