Elon Musk's X and xAI company officially filed a lawsuit with the court on Monday, accusing Apple and OpenAI of colluding to stifle competition in the artificial intelligence field by leveraging their market monopoly. The core of the lawsuit is the cooperation agreement between Apple and ChatGPT being integrated into its system.
The lawsuit documents state that Apple's move was aimed at "desperately protecting its smartphone monopoly," while OpenAI was described as "the company that benefits the most from suppressing AI competition and innovation" and referred to as the "monopolist in the generative AI chatbot market." Musk believes this collaboration between the two giants would create an unfair competitive barrier for other AI companies.
This lawsuit marks the latest escalation in Musk's long-standing feud with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Musk was once a co-founder of OpenAI but left due to differences in the company's direction. He previously attempted to sue to prevent OpenAI from becoming a for-profit company and had even offered to acquire the company for $97.4 billion, which was rejected.
Musk has publicly expressed concerns about Apple's partnership with OpenAI multiple times on the X platform. He previously posted that "no artificial intelligence company except OpenAI could rank first in the App Store," implying Apple's potential monopolistic behavior in AI application distribution.
The collaboration between Apple and OpenAI was first announced last June, and the related features are expected to be officially launched this December. As for this lawsuit, neither OpenAI nor Apple has immediately responded to requests for comment.
