Recently, 911 emergency call centers have faced severe staff shortages, which not only affected the efficiency of emergency responses but also placed significant pressure on existing dispatchers. In this context, a startup company named Aurelian emerged, focusing on developing an AI voice assistant designed to help 911 call centers handle non-emergency calls.

Aurelian's founder, Max Keenan, initially focused on automating appointments for hair salons during the 2022 summer program at Y Combinator. However, a conversation with a customer made him realize that there were significant issues in the operation of non-emergency call centers. He learned that many non-emergency tasks were actually handled by the same dispatchers who answered 911 emergency calls. Therefore, he decided to shift the company's focus to developing an AI voice assistant to alleviate the workload of dispatchers.
The AI voice assistant can effectively identify non-emergency incidents such as noise complaints, parking violations, or lost wallets. These incidents do not require immediate police response and can be handled by collecting relevant information and creating reports or directly passing the information to the police department for further processing. More importantly, when the AI identifies an emergency, it immediately transfers the call to a human dispatcher, ensuring timely response to emergency situations.
Since its launch in May 2024, Aurelian's AI assistant has been deployed in multiple 911 dispatch centers, including Snohomish County in Washington State, Chattanooga in Tennessee, and Kalamazoo in Michigan. These emergency call centers chose Aurelian mainly because dispatchers face high pressure and high turnover rates, and many dispatchers often need to work overtime, with working hours reaching 12 to 16 hours.
In addition, Aurelian is not the only AI startup addressing non-emergency calls. Similar companies like Hyper and Prepared are also working in this field. However, Aurelian's AI assistant is leading in practical applications, having already handled thousands of real calls, becoming the only solution currently in use in the market.
Key Points:
1. 🤖 Aurelian launched an AI voice assistant aimed at helping 911 call centers manage non-emergency calls.
2. ⏱️ Dispatchers face high pressure and high turnover rates, and AI technology helps reduce their workload.
3. 🌐 Aurelian has been deployed in multiple 911 dispatch centers and has become a leader in the industry.
