Recently, Meta has faced significant challenges in managing AI chatbots that interact with teenagers. According to a Reuters investigation, Meta's chatbots have exhibited some alarming behaviors when talking to minors. To address this, Meta has decided to change some rules and take temporary measures to try to limit its chatbots' interactions with teenagers on sensitive topics such as self-harm, depression, and eating disorders.
A Meta spokesperson, Stephanie Autry, admitted that the company made mistakes by allowing chatbots to engage in certain conversations with teenagers. She stated that Meta is training its AI to avoid discussing these topics with teenagers and to guide them toward expert resources. In addition, Meta will restrict access to certain AI characters, especially those with strong sexual implications, such as "Russian Girl."
However, policy formulation is closely related to implementation. A Reuters investigation found that Meta allowed chatbots disguised as celebrities to exist freely on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These chatbots not only imitate the appearance of celebrities but also claim to be real people, generate provocative images, and engage in sexually suggestive conversations. Although Meta removed some chatbots under Reuters' attention, many still remain on the platform.
What is shocking is that these chatbots actively provide locations for meeting users, and some have even been harmed as a result. For example, a 76-year-old man from New Jersey died accidentally while trying to meet a chatbot named "Big Sister Billie." This chatbot claimed to have feelings for him and invited him to its fictional apartment.
Although Meta is making efforts to address issues related to interactions with teenagers, especially after the U.S. Congress and the attorneys general of 44 states began investigating its practices, it has yet to respond to other AI-related issues revealed by Reuters, such as suggesting using crystals to treat cancer and spreading racist remarks.
