Reddit has recently announced a new feature being tested, aimed at enhancing the user reading experience while providing news publishers with more tools. This feature allows users to open article links directly within the Reddit app and view other users' comments at the bottom of the page, enabling them to understand different perspectives while browsing articles.
This feature comes at a time when news publishers are facing limitations in traffic on traditional platforms. With AI tools gradually taking the lead in news dissemination, Reddit hopes to provide publishers with a new channel to better engage with their readers.
A Reddit spokesperson, Courtney Geesey-Dorr, stated that this feature was designed with publishers' paywall policies in mind, and some users may encounter subscription restrictions while reading. In addition, some publishers may choose to share unlocked links or relax their paywalls for Reddit users.
For publishers, Reddit also offers a series of backend analytics tools that allow them to track which subreddits are sharing their stories and obtain relevant performance metrics such as upvotes and click-through rates. These tools are similar in function to Meta's now-discontinued CrowdTangle, which was used to monitor popular content on Facebook. Furthermore, Reddit allows publishers to synchronize their RSS feeds, automatically importing articles and sharing them across different subreddits. These features are part of the Reddit Pro business platform, which was launched last year to support publishers in better using Reddit for content distribution.
The new feature being tested by Reddit not only provides users with a more convenient way to read, but also offers news publishers more powerful tools and data support. It is expected that this feature will be widely adopted in the future.
