Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian recently announced the establishment of a new subsidiary called Mind Robotics, focusing on industrial artificial intelligence and robotics technology. This is the second company split by Rivian this year; in March, Rivian had previously spun off its internal micro-mobility division into Also Inc.

In the latest third-quarter shareholder letter, Rivian stated that Mind Robotics will leverage the company's operational data advantages, aiming to "reimagine the way physical businesses operate through industrial AI" and create a data-driven robotic ecosystem. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe mentioned in an investor call that the company recognized the opportunity to develop robotic solutions to improve the efficiency of manufacturing plants. He will serve as chairman of the Mind Robotics board, with Rivian also participating as a shareholder.

Scaringe pointed out that the widespread application of artificial intelligence across industries has changed the way businesses operate, and the potential for application in the physical world is immeasurable. He believes that establishing Mind Robotics reflects the company's desire to have direct control and influence over the design and development of advanced industrial AI and robotics technologies.

Currently, Mind Robotics has completed a $115 million seed round of financing, led by the venture capital firm Eclipse. Jiten Behl, a partner at Eclipse, confirmed this investment on LinkedIn; Behl previously worked at Rivian.

It is worth noting that it is currently unclear whether Rivian employees will be transferred to Mind Robotics, although the company hinted at this possibility in the shareholder letter. Scaringe mentioned that with strong technical talent and an innovative culture, Rivian can identify more areas of value, thus accelerating its mission.

Robots and industrial artificial intelligence are becoming hot spots for investment, with multiple related companies actively raising funds and launching products. Tesla and General Motors are also conducting research in these areas. Although the future plans of Mind Robotics are still unclear, the company's trademark applications indicate that its business scope could cover various aspects from machinery to vehicles.
