ByteDance is accelerating its self-research and premium strategy in the VR hardware field. At the ByteDance Scholarship Award Ceremony in 2025, Yang Zhenyuan, Vice President of Technology at ByteDance, revealed that its VR brand PICO plans to launch a new generation of products in 2026.
According to Yang Zhenyuan, the next-generation head-mounted display from PICO will be equipped with a self-developed dedicated chip for headsets. This self-developed chip was launched in June 2022 and has completed the back-end process in 2024. It is now in mass production, and all indicators have met the design requirements.
The core advantage of this dedicated chip lies in its ability to process high-definition, high-frame-rate video with low latency and high precision in real time, keeping system latency around only 12 milliseconds. This will greatly enhance the user's sense of immersion and comfort, and effectively alleviate VR motion sickness.
In addition to the self-developed chip, PICO's new product also achieves a breakthrough in display technology. The new product will use a custom MicroOLED screen, whose core display indicators reach industry-leading levels:
Pixels per inch (PPI): nearly 4000, about 9 times that of the previously released iPhone17Pro Max screen.
Pixels per degree (PPD): reaches an average of 40, more than 45 in the central area, which is more than double that of PICO3.
The high-performance self-developed chip combined with top display technology demonstrates PICO's ambition to provide an ultimate immersive experience in the next generation of VR/AR hardware competition.
