Microsoft Advances Windows AI Assistant Program, Balancing Risks and Innovations

Microsoft recently revealed in its official documentation that, although the new generation of AI agents on Windows 11 may carry potential risks, they are still considered an essential part of the future operating system. These AI agents are designed to simulate human operations, including clicking on interfaces, managing applications and files, to help users complete multi-step tasks. However, Microsoft has also warned users that these agents may experience "hallucinations," be deceived by malicious prompts, or even become a new entry point for hacker attacks.

Starting in October 2025, Microsoft plans to turn every Windows 11 computer into an AI PC, allowing users to interact with the system through natural language. The new taskbar search box will use "Ask Copilot," enabling users to summon the AI agent for background task management with one click. Although most features are currently optional, Microsoft has already positioned "agent computing" as the next-generation core architecture of Windows.

To address the security risks of AI agents, Microsoft introduced the "Agent Workspace," providing a separate running environment for AI agents. Unlike traditional virtual machines, the agent workspace will have independent accounts and permissions, aiming to limit potential damage within controllable boundaries. Each AI agent will be tied to a restricted user account to ensure its activities are monitored.

However, AI agents still have read and write access to "known folders," which has increased users' concerns about privacy and security. Microsoft emphasized that all agent features must be activated by the user, and it provided a "Model Context Protocol" to regulate interactions between agents and applications. This protocol limits the agent's direct access to the system and centralizes the management of authentication, authorization, and logging.

Although Microsoft has made many efforts in the security design of AI agents, trust from users remains an important issue. Currently, Windows 11 is facing user doubts due to poor experience and privacy issues. Microsoft must gradually rebuild trust through transparent, optional features, and real value.
