At the main forum of the 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival, Sun Zhonghuai, Chairman of Tencent's Online Video, delivered a keynote speech on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the film industry. He pointed out that as generative AI technology continues to mature, the way films are created is undergoing significant changes, and the next 12 months will be a critical window period for the emergence of AI feature films.
Sun Zhonghuai emphasized that AI is changing the distribution of creative power in the film industry, driving it into a new renaissance period. Currently, the application of AI in short video content is much faster than in long-form videos, but he believes that improvements in AI technology will greatly enhance the efficiency and quality of long-form content production.
In the short term, the greatest value AI brings to film production lies in reducing costs and improving efficiency, making image production faster and more lightweight. In the medium to long term, AI's potential lies in enhancing the quality of creation, transforming imagination into computable content. Meanwhile, market trends also show that the AIization of short content is far ahead of that of long content.
However, Sun Zhonghuai also mentioned some limitations of AI video technology. Currently, AI-generated videos still have shortcomings in terms of visual consistency and controllability, especially in the detailed performance of long takes. In addition, AI still appears stiff in depicting micro-expressions and subtle movements of human actors, making it difficult to capture complex emotions. As for video quality, current AI-generated content is mostly 1080P, while true 4K generation technology is not yet mature.
Although there are currently no AI feature films that meet industry standards in the market, many explorers are actively trying. Sun Zhonghuai predicts that with continuous technological advances, AI feature films will develop rapidly within the next year.
Huayi Brothers launched the "H·AI Flame Project" in November this year, including nine AI short dramas and one AI movie, showing the industry's attention and practice regarding AI technology.
