This move marks the beginning of Microsoft providing detailed change logs for AI models in Windows 11, similar to system patches, helping users track these "silent updates" of algorithmic components.

AI Components: Core and Update Mechanism Locally
These AI components form the foundation for the local AI experience on Copilot+ PCs (typically requiring an NPU with over 40TOPs of computing power). Currently, multiple components including semantic analysis, image processing, content extraction, and the lightweight large model Phi Silica have been included in this change log system.
Silent Iteration: Monitoring has found that AI models are updated every few weeks. For example, multiple updates in December 2025 corresponded to system patch days and optional update schedules, with version numbers precise to the 1.2511.x level.
Management Path: Users with AI-enabled computers can view and manage these models through "Settings > System > AI Components," while older computers display a blank page for this section.
System Expansion: Patch Package Size Surges to 5GB
The introduction of AI models is significantly changing the size of Windows updates. According to Windows Latest, due to the default inclusion of these AI models in Microsoft Update Catalog (.msu), the monthly "Tuesday Patch Day" update package for Windows 11 has surged from less than 800MB in the past to 4-5GB.
This leap in size reflects the continuous consumption of system resources by local AI models.

Future Outlook: More Frequent Modular Updates
Microsoft's move is seen as preparation for more frequent AI iterations. By treating AI components differently from traditional built-in applications like "Photos" or "Paint" (which typically do not have independent change logs), Microsoft grants AI components the same maintenance status as core products like Office and Outlook. This indicates that future optimizations in Windows 11 will increasingly occur at the algorithmic level, unnoticed by users.
