According to a leaked internal message from OpenAI, the company's rift with its long-time ally Microsoft is deepening. To reduce its over-reliance on Microsoft's computing power, OpenAI is rapidly strengthening its strategic alliance with Amazon.

Amazon Invests 50 Billion Dollars

In this reshuffling of AI power, Amazon has shown aggressive moves:

  • Substantial Investment: Amazon invested 50 billion dollars in OpenAI this February.

  • Computing Power Support: As part of the agreement, Amazon will provide OpenAI with 2 gigawatts of self-developed Trainium chip computing power.

  • Business Collaboration: The two companies are working together on AWS's Bedrock platform to create customized "AI agents" for enterprise customers.

Questioning Microsoft's "Restrictive" Capabilities, Criticizing Anthropic's Strategy

Danielle Drescher, OpenAI's Chief Revenue Officer, was strongly critical in an internal message:

  • Implied Criticism of Microsoft: She pointed out that Microsoft currently limits OpenAI's ability to meet existing needs of enterprise customers, while Amazon's Bedrock platform has "astonishing" demand, which is key to monetization.

  • Attacking Competitors: Drescher said that Anthropic's lack of sufficient computing power was a "strategic mistake," and criticized its strategy as being based on "fear, restrictions, and elite control."

OpenAI officially transitioned to a non-profit company last year, which objectively weakened Microsoft's control, allowing it to legally obtain computing resources from other cloud providers such as Amazon.

As Microsoft invests more computing power into its own Copilot project, the relationship between the two has evolved into a complex competitive collaboration. Currently, the new alliance between Amazon and OpenAI not only puts pressure on Microsoft, but also further escalates the already intense competition for AI computing power and market dominance.
