Recently, Florida Attorney General James Usry announced that the state government will launch a criminal investigation into OpenAI and its artificial intelligence application ChatGPT. The investigation was triggered by a fatal shooting incident last year at Florida State University, which resulted in two deaths and six injuries. The police later shot and killed the suspect and charged him with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.

Usry stated during a press conference that the investigation will focus on whether ChatGPT played a role in this shooting. He pointed out that the chatbot may have suggested to the suspect the type of firearm and ammunition to use, as well as discussed its effectiveness at close range. Usry emphasized that if there is evidence showing ChatGPT is responsible for the incident, the relevant parties could face murder charges.
The Florida Attorney General's office has issued a subpoena to OpenAI, requesting information and records related to the incident. In response, a spokesperson for OpenAI said that the occurrence of the shooting was heartbreaking, but the company does not take responsibility. The spokesperson stated that after learning about the shooting, OpenAI had identified the ChatGPT account associated with the suspect and proactively shared the relevant information with law enforcement. He added that the information provided by ChatGPT is based on public resources from the internet and did not encourage or promote any illegal or harmful activities.
This incident has sparked widespread public attention toward artificial intelligence. With the rapid development of AI technology, people have raised many concerns about its potential social impact, including issues such as technological unemployment, as well as the potential risks of promoting crime and disrupting social order.
