Responding to speculation about changes in Microsoft's relationship with OpenAI, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a strong statement during the company's earnings call on Wednesday. He clearly stated that Microsoft is ready to fully "leverage" the new agreement with OpenAI, ensuring its leading position in the competitive AI market.
Ensuring Continued Access to Core Intellectual Property
Nadella emphasized that, under the revised partnership, Microsoft has the right to use all of OpenAI's most advanced models and agent products up until 2032. The key change is that Microsoft will no longer need to pay royalties to OpenAI for using these cutting-edge technologies, which saves the company significant operational costs.
Although OpenAI recently announced a partnership with Amazon, breaking Microsoft's previous exclusive status, Nadella is not concerned. He pointed out that Microsoft holds a 27% stake in OpenAI, and the company has also committed to purchasing more than $25 billion worth of Microsoft cloud services, maintaining a very strong bond of interest between the two companies.
Multi-Model Strategy Drives AI Business Revenue Doubling
Microsoft's current AI business has exceeded $37 billion in annualized revenue, growing by as much as 123% year-over-year, a strong performance that proves the success of its strategy. Nadella believes that enterprise customers prefer a variety of model choices, and the richness of models available on the Microsoft platform now exceeds any competitor.
