Microsoft's developer platform GitHub officially changed the pricing model of its AI coding tool GitHub Copilot on June 1st, shifting from a fixed pricing per user to a usage-based billing model. Vladimir Fedorov, the Chief Technology Officer, confirmed at a staff meeting on Wednesday that this move led to a significant increase in customer usage, making June the "best month in the platform's history" ever.
Although the company did not disclose specific financial data due to the end of the fiscal quarter, Fedorov stated that based on the current surge in usage, he personally believes that GitHub has no need to significantly raise prices due to the increased usage.

This billing change aligns GitHub with other programming tools in the market that use a usage-based pricing model. Since being acquired by Microsoft in 2018, GitHub gained a leading position in the market through its large developer ecosystem.
However, recently, with the rapid rise of native AI coding tools such as Cursor, OpenAI Codex, and Anthropic's Claude Code, GitHub faces increasingly fierce competition. Microsoft executives even proposed in last year's internal meetings the need to completely revamp GitHub to maintain its advantage. It is worth noting that the surge in usage has also posed challenges to the infrastructure. GitHub has experienced dozens of major outages in 2026, and Microsoft is currently seeking assistance from cloud competitor Amazon to address capacity limitations.
This billing change and usage breakthrough mark the AI coding tool market entering a deep stage of competition in both business models and infrastructure capabilities.
