OpenAI released an official announcement, announcing the launch of a new desktop application that integrates Codex and ChatGPT experiences into one. This move aims to enhance the AI programming experience while expanding the product's reach from developer communities to a broader non-technical user base.
After the update, the desktop version of Codex will transform into a new ChatGPT desktop application, consisting of three core components: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. The updated application will retain existing Codex tasks and projects, and users can choose to continue using the Codex application icon in settings, ensuring a smooth and seamless transition.
The three modules each have their own functions, covering everything from chatting to coding in one place.
The new application features clear and well-defined functions. The Chat module supports asking questions, searching, and interactive conversations, meeting daily information query needs. The Work module is designed for knowledge-based work scenarios, used for research, information analysis, and creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites. The Codex module is specifically tailored for developers, allowing software development using local files, repositories, terminals, and developer tools, covering the entire workflow from daily communication to office productivity to code writing.
For users already using the ChatGPT desktop version, opening the application will prompt them to download the new ChatGPT desktop application. Both old and new versions can coexist. The new version is positioned as a completely new application that combines chat, work, and Codex. The old version will be renamed ChatGPT Classic and remain available without migration, continuing to receive model updates, bug fixes, security patches, and support for existing enterprise features. However, the official also clearly states that new proxy features may only be available in the new application.
Cloud and local separation, clear data synchronization strategy
In terms of data synchronization, chat history between the ChatGPT web version and desktop application will remain synchronized. However, cloud-based Work conversations will not appear in the desktop version's Work section. The threads and local files in the desktop version's Work will remain on the original computer. This design ensures cross-device consistency of chat data while also addressing the need for local file security and privacy in work scenarios.
From the ChatGPT desktop version to Codex and now to this "three-in-one" application, OpenAI is accelerating the integration of fragmented AI capabilities into a unified entry point. When chatting, working, and coding can all be done within the same application, the AI assistant is evolving from a single-function tool into a productivity platform covering the entire workflow.
