Greg Brockman, CEO of OpenAI, recently pointed the company's next steps towards the human body during a conversation with journalists in New York. He stated that OpenAI is very interested in integrating ChatGPT and related AI capabilities into wearable devices, especially products like smart glasses. "We are definitely very interested in integration," he said, "I think this is a use case for APIs — to spread it out so anyone can do the integration."
Brockman revealed that OpenAI is considering opening access through APIs to third-party devices, allowing hardware such as smart glasses to utilize voice interaction capabilities similar to ChatGPT Live. In his view, this should become an interface for interaction and be available on all devices. However, he also admitted that the relevant API is still in a very early stage and has a long way to go before it is fully developed.
Currently, some smart glasses on the market (such as Rokid's products) can call upon OpenAI's models, but that is not a complete account-level access to ChatGPT. Manufacturers such as Meta, Google, and Samsung are also accelerating their own AI glasses projects. Brockman mentioned that OpenAI hopes to allow users in the future to directly use tools such as ChatGPT or Codex through wearable devices, achieving more comprehensive control than within a mobile application, rather than being limited to the restricted interactions on a screen.
As for OpenAI's own hardware plans, Brockman only mentioned that the direction may differ from existing wearable devices, revealing no specific details. He emphasized that broader device integration requires support from new APIs — wearable devices have special needs for running continuously in the background and processing multi-modal inputs such as cameras. This kind of integration is categorized by him as part of OpenAI's long-term vision, but for now, it still stands at the threshold of exploration.
