According to Bloomberg, the first AI hardware device being developed by OpenAI is expected to be priced between $300 and $400. The device was previously revealed as a screenless smart speaker driven by artificial intelligence, seen as the "physical embodiment" of ChatGPT extending into real-life scenarios, and more product details are gradually being disclosed.
The report states that the device features a ring-shaped design similar to a "donut," making it easy for users to move it around different spaces in their homes, such as bedside tables or kitchen countertops. According to sources, the product will be made with high-quality metal materials, positioned as a premium consumer electronics product, and will include unique "moving parts," whose specific functions have not been disclosed yet.
In terms of price, the device is expected to be higher than the traditional smart speaker market. Its price may reach $300 to $400. Currently, most smart speakers under Amazon's brand are priced between $40 and $240. A higher pricing may become one of the challenges OpenAI faces when entering the smart speaker market.
OpenAI's move into hardware is seen as an important attempt to further expand the application boundaries of ChatGPT. Through dedicated devices, OpenAI hopes to make its AI assistant more integrated into users' daily lives. However, the smart speaker market has long faced profit pressures, and companies like Amazon previously invested significant resources in related businesses without establishing a stable profit model. Therefore, the product's future market performance remains uncertain.
According to the report, the device was jointly developed by OpenAI and LoveFrom, a design studio founded by Jony Ive, former chief design officer at Apple. It is expected to be released at some point in 2027.
Notably, OpenAI's entry into the hardware field has not been smooth. Previously, Apple sued OpenAI, accusing it of stealing trade secrets, which OpenAI denied. As AI companies gradually shift from model competition to integrated software and hardware layouts, AI terminal devices may become an important direction of industry competition in the next stage.
