ByteDance's Douyin is reaching a new milestone in its artificial intelligence efforts. According to the latest information, the exploration project under Douyin's personal assistant direction (codename "Spell") has been officially named "Xiaodu" and is planned to launch an independent app version.
This name was finalized as early as this summer. The product is currently in intensive internal testing, and the final public version may be adjusted based on actual test results. The official has not yet announced an exact release date.
Looking back at Douyin's exploration path in the personal assistant field, its technological evolution has a clear trajectory. In December 2025, the preview version of Douyin's mobile assistant was first introduced and launched on the Nubia engineering prototype developed in collaboration with ZTE. Subsequently, in September 2026, the consumer version of Douyin's mobile assistant was officially released, initially landing on the Nubia NaviX Ultra model.
Industry insiders point out that the upcoming independent Xiaodu app can be seen as a deep extension of Douyin's core personal agent capabilities previously accumulated on mobile devices into a broader independent application form. This means that in the future, users may be able to experience more convenient and comprehensive AI personal assistant services through independent applications without being restricted by specific phone manufacturers or system integrations.
