Chip giant AMD has officially announced the acquisition of AI startup World Labs, with the deal structured as a stock-only transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. Upon completion of the transaction, Li Fei-Fei, co-founder of World Labs and professor at Stanford University, will serve as AMD's Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, directly collaborating with AMD Chairman and CEO Lisa Su to advance the company's cutting-edge AI strategy.
World Labs was founded in early 2024 by Li Fei-Fei along with renowned scholars Ben Mildenhall and Justin Johnson. Its core objective is to break the boundaries of traditional language models, building a foundational model capable of understanding and reasoning about the physical world—referred to as "spatial intelligence." The company previously acquired SceniX to expand its robotic simulation capabilities.
In recent months, the team released Atlas, an innovative multimodal model architecture. This model integrates generative AI with multi-view geometry algorithms, achieving a "new perspective prediction" for two-dimensional images similar to how language models predict the next token. It effectively overcomes long-standing challenges in the field of computer vision, demonstrating significant practical value in robot reinforcement learning training, scene generation, and real-world reconstruction in engineering and construction.
AMD has been a strategic investor in World Labs from the early stages, and the two companies have previously collaborated on technical efforts to optimize model training and inference on AMD GPU platforms. This full-stack integration will deeply bind World Labs' spatial models with AMD's computing hardware ecosystem, creating a complete end-to-end pipeline from underlying chips, system software, foundational models, to data platforms, marking a new phase in the industrial application of advanced physical AI combined with edge-side computing power.
