Recently, Elon Musk's brain-computer interface company Neuralink achieved a stunning major technological breakthrough — connecting the AI model Grok directly to a human brain. This means brain-computer interfaces are moving from simply "moving a cursor with thoughts" into a new era of "controlling AI with thoughts."
72-Hour Extreme Coding Sprint: Engineers Moved Into a Patient's Home to Build 8 Major Features
Behind all of this was an intense real-world sprint recently launched by the Neuralink team. Several core engineers packed their bags and moved into the trial participant's home, then went through a high-intensity 72-hour lockdown development sprint, cranking out eight brand-new technology prototypes in one go.
The participant, Kenneth, is a Neuralink P21 clinical trial patient who has been diagnosed with ALS for seven full years. Despite his illness, he has remained extremely optimistic. With the engineers working together, the technological results created during these 72 hours not only opened up the capture of low-level neural signals, but also extended all the way to system-level interaction and deep integration with top-level AI large models.
From Low-Level Signals to Top-Level AI: A Full Breakdown of Core Features
Neural Voice Activity Detection (Neural VAD): In the past, if a patient wanted to speak with their thoughts, they first had to manually press a switch. For people with quadriplegia or ALS, this was no small burden. To solve this, the team developed a "Neural Voice Activity Detection" system, like a 24/7 neural sentry that monitors the stream of brain signals sent back by the implant in real time. The system can automatically tell whether the patient is at rest or preparing to speak. After detecting an intention pulse, it automatically starts decoding within milliseconds, and as soon as speech ends, it automatically goes back to sleep. This achieves true zero-button, pure-thought "speech the moment you intend it."
