Recently, WhatsApp officially launched a new photo expansion tool powered by Meta AI for select iOS beta users. This feature is deeply integrated into the app's drawing editor, aiming to bring more possibilities to mobile image processing through generative AI technology.

In this update, iPhone users with Apple Intelligence can use WhatsApp's new “Expand” option to intelligently extend images in chats or status updates. When users pinch or drag beyond the original image boundaries, Meta AI automatically performs an in-depth analysis of the photo content and generates a naturally connected extended version within seconds.

If users are not satisfied with the result after generation, they can tap the undo button to restore the original and generate again. Currently, this feature is in the TestFlight testing stage. Since it has previously appeared in the Android beta and some public iOS versions, the industry expects it to be rolled out more broadly and widely very soon.

The launch of this feature highlights the trend of messaging apps transforming toward intelligent creation of multimedia content. As the collaborative capabilities of on-device and cloud AI continue to strengthen, advanced features such as image expansion—previously common in professional software such as Photoshop—are accelerating their penetration into mass-market social scenarios, further lowering the barrier to high-quality image editing.
