Meta has announced a major reorganization of its AI department, splitting it into two core teams: "AI Products" and "AGI Foundation," to address technical challenges and accelerate product development.

In this organizational restructuring, the original AI department has been divided into two key teams: The "AI Products" group, led by Connor Hayes, focuses on the Meta AI assistant and its application features across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The "AGI Foundation" team is co-led by Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel, concentrating on research and development of the Llama model, advanced reasoning capabilities, and exploration of multimodal models.

Meta's AI research lab FAIR (Fundamental AI Research) will continue to operate, with some multimedia teams being integrated into the new structure. The company stated that this reorganization aims to improve product development efficiency and grant greater autonomy to each team, with no layoffs involved at this stage.

Behind this restructuring lies the growing external pressure faced by Meta in the open-source AI model field. Its Llama4 model failed to meet expected performance levels, with the largest version being delayed, while the strong performance of China's emerging team Deepseek further exacerbated this situation.

Meta hopes to regain an active position in the rapidly evolving AI arena through clearer team divisions and more flexible development mechanisms.
