At the recently concluded WordCamp US2025 conference, Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress and CEO of Automattic, presented a new AI development tool called Telex to the attendees. Mullenweg referred to this tool as "V0 or a cute version," aiming to simplify the process of building WordPress websites through an AI interface, helping users create website content more easily.
Telex is still in the experimental stage, and users can access the tool via the website telex.automattic.ai. Users simply need to enter a simple prompt, and Telex will generate the required content blocks and provide them for download in a .zip file, which can then be installed on their own WordPress site or used in the Word Playground. This approach makes the website building process more intuitive, eliminating the need for users to have in-depth knowledge of coding.
In his speech at the conference, Mullenweg demonstrated how a developer used Telex to create a simple marketing animation. This flexibility and creativity left the attendees excited about the potential of AI in website building. Although some projects ran into issues during early testing, Mullenweg remains optimistic about the future possibilities of AI in advancing WordPress' mission. He emphasized that the goal of WordPress has always been to make complex web building simpler and more accessible, and AI is a crucial tool in achieving this goal.
Mullenweg also showcased another simpler AI tool that provides a WordPress help assistant function directly in the browser. Additionally, he mentioned his favorite AI browser, Comet by Perplexity, which allows users to interact directly with WordPress.
Although AI technology holds great promise, Mullenweg also expressed some concerns, particularly regarding discussions about whether AI could become a bubble. However, he firmly believes that the inherent potential of AI will bring positive impacts to the future development of WordPress.
During the conference, Mullenweg briefly discussed a legal dispute with the hosting provider WP Engine. He accused WP Engine of profiting from the results of WordPress without providing sufficient compensation. He stated that the case is progressing through the legal process and that he will continue to monitor its developments.
