Technology media BleepingComputer reported that OpenAI has launched a beta program called "Codex Alpha" for its AI coding assistant Codex, inviting developers and users to try the latest Codex models and features ahead of the official release at the 2025 Developer Day (DevDay2025) next week.
This new program was quietly launched to give developers an opportunity to experience the new model and features. According to the official description, users who join the Codex Alpha program can access the new version of the Codex model in advance.
The currently available model list shows that Codex Alpha provides two series with a total of seven levels of models: the gpt-5-codex series is divided into low, medium, and high levels, focusing on pure programming tasks; while the gpt-5 series is further divided into minimal, low, medium, and high levels, offering different degrees of reasoning ability. Notably, the "minimal" version responds the fastest, suitable for lightweight tasks, while the "high-end" version maximizes the depth of reasoning, specifically designed to solve complex or ambiguous programming problems.
This update marks a major iteration by OpenAI in the field of AI programming, aiming to provide developers with more accurate and efficient assistance by segmenting the capabilities and computing power of the models.
