According to OpenAI's plan, the new version of ChatGPT will be released in December, allowing users to customize their AI assistant's personality, including choosing more human-like responses, using numerous emojis, or displaying friendly behaviors. Notably, OpenAI will introduce more comprehensive age verification measures in this update, which will allow adult users to generate adult content. Although the company has not yet specified its age verification methods and additional protective measures for adult content, its goal is to provide users with a safe and free environment.
Additionally, OpenAI launched a dedicated ChatGPT experience for users under 18 in September, automatically guiding young users to content suitable for them to prevent graphic and sexual materials. The company is also developing a behavior-based age prediction technology, which determines whether a user is over 18 by analyzing their interactions with ChatGPT.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on X that the stricter safety measures implemented due to mental health issues have made the chatbot "less useful and enjoyable" for many users without mental health problems. These stricter safety measures were introduced following a teenager's suicide in California, where the teenager's parents sued in August, claiming that ChatGPT provided them with suicide advice. Just two months later, Altman said the company had been able to alleviate serious mental health issues.
At the same time, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has initiated investigations into multiple tech companies, including OpenAI, focusing on potential negative impacts of AI chatbots on children and teenagers. Altman stated on Tuesday that considering the seriousness of the issue, OpenAI hopes to gradually lift restrictions while ensuring safety.
