Recently, YouTube announced a new AI tool for its partner creators - the portrait recognition feature. This tool is designed to help creators identify and report deepfake videos that use their likenesses without authorization. According to YouTube's description, after verifying their identity, creators can view videos marked with content detection tags in YouTube Studio. If they find videos that seem to be unauthorized AI-generated content, creators can request the removal of these videos.
The first users of this feature have already received notifications, and it will be rolled out to more creators over the next few months. YouTube mentioned in the feature description that since the tool is still under development, it may display some normal videos that include the creator's real face, not just modified or synthesized versions. The technology works similarly to YouTube's existing content recognition system, which is mainly used to detect copyrighted audio and video content.
YouTube first announced this feature last year and began testing it in December through a pilot project in collaboration with Creative Artists Agency (CAA). At the time, YouTube stated, "Through this collaboration, several of the most influential creators around the world will be able to use this early-stage technology to identify and manage AI-generated content featuring their likenesses on YouTube on a large scale."
In addition to the portrait recognition tool, YouTube and Google are also developing other features to address AI-generated content on the platform. Earlier in March of last year, YouTube started requiring creators to label any videos that contain AI-generated or modified content, and announced strict policies against AI-generated music that imitates an artist's unique singing style or rap voice.
