Spotify announced on Wednesday that it will give users more control by launching a new "Recommended Playlist" feature. This feature is currently available only to Premium users in New Zealand and is still in the testing phase, with gradual expansion to other markets.
This new tool allows users to describe their music needs in text to generate a playlist tailored to their personal taste. Spotify said that this playlist is not only based on the songs users currently like, but also takes into account the user's complete listening history since using Spotify, which makes this feature different from other playlists.
"Recommended Playlist" is an upgrade of Spotify's AI playlist feature launched last year. Users can now use longer text prompts to express the music they want to hear, such as "songs from my favorite artists over the past five years," and then further specify "rare tracks I haven't heard before." This new feature combines world knowledge to provide richer music recommendations.
In addition, users can set the refresh frequency of the playlist, such as daily or weekly updates. Spotify hopes users can create personalized playlists similar to "Discover Weekly," focusing on specific music genres, styles, or time periods.
Spotify also said that the generated playlists will include recommended descriptions and background information to help users understand why they received these music recommendations. At the same time, the platform will provide some starting hints to help users get started quickly.
In terms of social applications, Spotify is not the only company pushing for user control over algorithms. Instagram recently launched a new feature allowing users to control the type of short videos they see, while Bluesky allows users to use custom algorithms instead of its default recommendations.
