According to the latest survey released by German polling firm Dimap, more than 90% of German adults are concerned about AI being used for deepfakes. The survey was commissioned by Germany's First Television and conducted from March 30 to 31, involving 1,316 respondents. The results showed that 53% of respondents considered the risk of AI-generated deepfake content "very high," while 38% considered it "high."
The concerns of respondents mainly focused on several aspects, including the difficulty in distinguishing AI-generated fake news and the issue of jobs being replaced by AI. Looking ahead to the next five years, 38% of respondents believed AI would improve their lives, while 45% held the opposite view, thinking AI would make life worse. In particular, 51% of people aged 18 to 34 believed AI could improve their lives.
A deepfake refers to the use of artificial intelligence technology to synthesize and alter videos, images, or audio to create highly realistic fake content. In recent years, with the rapid development of large model technology, cases of using AI for face swapping, voice changing, and generating deepfake content have occurred frequently, bringing many challenges to society. Currently, many countries still lack sufficient regulations regarding artificial intelligence.
Earlier surveys showed that one-quarter of Americans had received a deepfake voice call in the past 12 months. Another 24% said they found it difficult to reliably distinguish AI voices from real human voices on the phone. On average, consumers in six markets receive 7.4 spam calls per week, with the highest number of spam calls in France and the most severe financial losses for victims in the UK.
With technological advances, the cost and difficulty of fraudsters imitating others' voices have significantly decreased, making deepfake fraud increasingly rampant. Once victims believe it is real, they may suffer from financial fraud or identity theft.
