Recently, the Yangpu District People's Court of Shanghai publicly heard and immediately announced the verdict of a case involving the use of AI technology for extortion. The defendant Yang used AI software to forge hospital diagnosis certificates and billing documents, and extorted money by claiming that he had fallen ill after dining at a restaurant.
AI Technology Becomes a Tool for Crime
This year, a barbecue restaurant reported to the police in the first half of the year, claiming that a customer had made a malicious claim by saying he "got sick from eating." The customer presented AI-generated medical records and invoices, forcing the restaurant to pay 2000 yuan.
Later, when the restaurant manager was talking with colleagues, he found out that another restaurant had also been subjected to the exact same scam. After receiving this clue, the police quickly got involved in the investigation and identified the suspect Yang through public video surveillance.
Exposing the Flaws and Falling into the Web of Justice
The police found many loopholes when comparing the materials submitted by Yang with the real electronic bills from the hospital. The forged materials not only included infection causes that doctors could never explicitly mark, but also had tax stamps on the invoices that did not match those of the hospital.
It was confirmed by the hospital that Yang had no relevant medical records, and he confessed to the crime of using AI tools to create false documents. Finally, the court sentenced Yang to four months of detention, with a four-month probation period, and fined him 2000 yuan for the crime of extortion.
