Anthropic released a blog post on August 27, introducing the "Model Hardware Standard" (MHS) in a research preview. Media outlets such as Reuters and CNBC interpreted this as the company's first public entry into embodied intelligence and physical AI fields—AI systems that can perceive the physical world, perform complex actions, and continuously learn, from autonomous driving to robotic arms.

A Unified Translation Layer for Giving AI a "Body"

Similar to the earlier Model Context Protocol (MCP), MHS is essentially a unified control and communication standard that allows AI agents to operate devices with programmable interfaces. With this "translation layer," agents can control microscopes, liquid processors, robotic arms, and even quantum computing equipment with minimal human intervention, running processes around the clock autonomously.

In early closed-door testing, MHS showed significant acceleration capabilities in hard tech fields such as biopharmaceuticals, quantum computing, and advanced manufacturing. A pharmaceutical giant, Genentech, stated that after enabling AI to directly control multiple heterogeneous experimental devices, the development and operation cycle of fully automated dose-response curve experiments was reduced to one-third of the original time. This step by Anthropic, which moves AI from the digital world to physical production lines, also means that the competition among large models is expanding from "conversations" to "hands-on tasks."
