According to Digitimes, Meta is restarting its paused smartwatch project that had been on hold for two years and plans to officially launch the product on September 17, 2025. The new device will be equipped with a camera and support deep integration with Meta's upcoming AI glasses, and is expected to play a key role in the wearable AI ecosystem.
The restarted smartwatch is primarily produced by Chinese contract manufacturing giant Huaqin Technology. According to reports, the project can be traced back to 2022, when Meta had already applied for a patent for a removable lens module and developed a prototype codenamed "Milan." Despite challenges such as battery life, cost control, and technical integration, the project was temporarily put on hold until early 2024, when it was restarted with the deep involvement of Huaqin.
Notably, Meta has been actively expanding its wearable technology strategy. Recently, TechCrunch also reported that Meta is developing a neural smart bracelet based on electromyography (EMG) technology, which can recognize user gestures for human-computer interaction. This product is being developed in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, aiming not only to improve the efficiency of human-computer interaction but also to address accessibility needs for users with disabilities.
Meta's continuous efforts highlight its growing ambitions in the field of AI + wearable devices. The integration of smartwatches with AI glasses and EMG bracelets is expected to become a crucial piece in its plan to build the next generation of interactive ecosystems.
