In Meta's recent second-quarter earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg once again expressed his confidence in the future development of AI glasses. He believes that smart glasses will be the ideal tool for people to interact with artificial intelligence, and those without these glasses in the future will face a significant cognitive disadvantage.

Zuckerberg pointed out that smart glasses can allow AI to see what the user sees, hear what the user hears, and communicate with the user. He emphasized that glasses equipped with displays will further enhance the user experience. For example, Meta's next-generation Orion augmented reality glasses will provide a wider holographic field of view, while some everyday AI glasses may be equipped with smaller displays.

As Meta continues to advance its efforts in smart glasses, products such as Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta have already been successfully launched. These glasses not only allow users to listen to music, take photos and videos, but also ask Meta AI about what they see. According to data from the eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, the sales revenue of Ray-Ban Meta has increased by more than three times year-over-year, which has greatly encouraged Meta.

Although the Reality Labs department at Meta has faced massive losses in recent years, Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the future. He mentioned that over the past 5 to 10 years, Reality Labs has conducted a series of research on different technologies to support the vision for the future of AI and consumer computing. Although the department's operating loss reached $4.53 billion in the second quarter, the total loss of the department has approached $70 billion since 2020, but Zuckerberg still believes that future consumer AI is likely to take the form of glasses.

However, although glasses seem to be the most suitable option now, future AI devices may be unexpected. Just as people did not know the necessity of smartphones before their emergence, the form of future devices may be something we cannot imagine. Nevertheless, Zuckerberg remains convinced that glasses will be the best way to integrate the physical and digital worlds, and AI will accelerate this process, driving the realization of his metaverse vision.
