Recently, a UK artificial intelligence startup, ManticAI, achieved outstanding results in an international prediction competition, drawing significant attention. The company was founded by former researchers from Google DeepMind. In a competition called the Metaculus Cup, ManticAI ranked eighth, successfully surpassing many prediction enthusiasts and some professionals.
The Metaculus Cup is hosted by a prediction company based in San Francisco. Participants were required to predict the likelihood of 60 events during the summer. These events included conflicts between Trump and Musk, and the removal of Cami Badenoch from the Conservative leadership. The participants' predictions were scored on September 1st. Although AI performance has not yet surpassed the best human predictors, this achievement has made many people believe that AI's development in predictive capabilities may be faster than expected.
Toby Shefran, co-founder of ManticAI, stated that the company's performance marks a milestone for the AI community in using large language models for predictions. He pointed out that ManticAI's system demonstrated stronger independence in predictions, avoiding the common tendency of human predictors to rely on the average of the community. ManticAI breaks down prediction problems into multiple tasks, which are handled by different machine learning models such as OpenAI, Google, and DeepSeek, fully leveraging their respective strengths.
Degeer Turan, CEO of Metaculus, believes that AI may match top human predictors by 2029. He noted that AI systems still face challenges in logical consistency and verification checks in complex predictions. However, ManticAI's system can efficiently and persistently handle multiple complex issues, learning from changing information day after day.
Although human predictors still believe they have an advantage in certain areas, top human predictors like Philip Tetlock have stated that experts still outperform the best AI on average. However, Warren Hatch, CEO of a prediction company, believes that future predictions will not rely solely on humans or AI, but rather on the collaboration between humans and AI to quickly obtain the best prediction results.
