Zeineb Farhat, a researcher at the ISC Business School in Paris, France, recently published a thought-provoking study in the journal "Applied Cognitive Psychology." The study evaluated the multidimensional impact of artificial intelligence tools on personal learning habits, daily work, and emotional life by conducting in-depth interviews with 45 young people aged 18 to 25 who frequently use ChatGPT on a daily basis.
The findings indicate that some participants showed a significant decline in their ability to think independently after becoming accustomed to getting ready-made answers from ChatGPT. They generally reported shorter attention spans, weaker memory of information, and increased self-doubt when dealing with daily tasks and making decisions. Some even admitted feeling obvious anxiety and distress when the tool was temporarily unavailable.
Researchers point out that this psychological and behavioral change is essentially an example of "cognitive offloading." People rely on external intelligent tools to store and process information, thereby reducing their dependence on their own memory and cognitive functions. As usage deepens, some heavy users have begun to prefer communicating with chatbots over interacting with friends, teachers, or colleagues, leading to a sense of social isolation in certain cases.
However, the study also objectively notes that ChatGPT is not entirely negative. Users who can selectively use the tool, viewing it as a brainstorming partner rather than a replacement for their own thinking, reported improved confidence and creativity.
The research team emphasized that due to the current sample size of only 45 individuals and the fact that participants are all from a specific young group in France, the conclusions cannot be directly generalized to all populations. Researchers call for future studies with larger sample sizes, covering different age groups and regions, and lasting longer to comprehensively assess the long-term impact of AI technology on human cognitive abilities and social behavior.
