The New York-based AI startup Runway has surpassed $200 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). This figure was disclosed on September 8 — four months earlier, co-founder and co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis had stated that the company's net ARR added more than $40 million in a single quarter, marking its fastest growth phase to date.
From Selling Video Tools to Selling "Simulated Layers"
This milestone is not about the video business itself but points to the next step: Runway is no longer just selling tools that convert text prompts into video clips, but instead selling the underlying simulated layers — "world models" that can learn physical laws from videos, train robots, autonomous cars, and software agents. The company bets that long-term enterprise contracts will last longer than the hype cycles of products like OpenAI's Sora, Google's Veo, and over a dozen challengers.
The growth trajectory is clear. On May 8, Germanidis said on X that Runway added more than $40 million in net ARR in the second quarter, even though the quarter was not yet halfway through, and specifically named Amazon and Robinhood as enterprise customers using Runway daily. In February this year, Runway completed a $315 million Series E funding round, with a post-money valuation of $5.3 billion, led by General Atlantic, with NVIDIA, Adobe Ventures, AMD Ventures, and others participating; previously, in April 2025, the Series D funding round raised $308 million with a valuation of around $3 billion. Since its founding in 2018, Runway has raised approximately $860 million in total funding. Based on the current valuation and ARR, its price-to-sales ratio is about 26.5 times.
The customer base is also becoming more diverse, including "every major film studio," advertising and marketing companies, game companies, architectural design firms, and large enterprise creative teams, with specific clients including Chime, Robinhood, Allstate, PayPal, Yamaha, Siemens, and SoFi. Runway had about 382 employees in 2026, an 82% increase from 210 in 2024, with an average revenue per employee of about $520,000.
