Spanish AI startup Magnific AI has introduced a new feature called "Relight," which allows users to use AI to alter the lighting and background of images. This technology makes it easier to create realistic and diverse effects in subject-centered scenes.

Magnific AI joined Freepik in May and developed Relight, which allows users to modify the lighting of images using AI prompts and optionally change the background. Users can control light adjustments through text prompts like "change the lighting to sci-fi neon green," provide reference images, or create custom light maps. According to Javi Lopez, co-founder of Magnific AI, Relight can be used for portraits, landscapes, backgrounds, and "any type of image."
On X, beta users have shared many examples showcasing the potential of this technology.
Lopez acknowledges some limitations. Unexpected facial changes may occur when the image contains multiple people or small faces. He points out that this issue is difficult to resolve, but Relight performs well with standard portraits. There are also some inaccuracies in precisely matching the new lighting with the original lighting.
This new feature is particularly useful in commercial photography, allowing products to be easily placed in different environments. While such image processing was possible before AI, Relight significantly speeds up the process and makes it accessible to non-professionals.
Relight is currently undergoing short-term testing and is expected to be available to all Magnific AI accounts next week. The company initially focused on AI-based image enlargement and continues to expand its toolkit with additional AI image features.
